Profile

Maarten van der Weijden is an Olympic champion and a profound example of human resilience. In 2008, he won gold in open water swimming, an extraordinary achievement that came seven years after he was diagnosed with leukemia in 2001.

His journey of overcoming adversity did not stop with his Olympic victory. He famously swam the grueling Dutch “Elfstedentocht” (Eleven Cities Tour), raising an incredible 18 million euros for cancer research. As a mathematician, Maarten now blends his sharp analytical thinking with his deep personal experience of resilience, a unique combination he uses to inspire others facing their own challenges.

Talk Topic

In his talk, Maarten van der Weijden shares a powerful, four-step cycle Feel, Think, Compassion, Do that redefines resilience by centering it on compassion. He argues that the key to overcoming life’s greatest challenges isn’t just toughness, but a willingness to engage with our experiences authentically.

Drawing from his remarkable journey as a leukemia survivor turned Olympic champion, Maarten shows how compassion for oneself and others is the critical force that transforms profound setbacks into opportunities for genuine growth. His approach challenges conventional societal pressures to “just be strong,” offering instead a heartfelt, practical guide for facing life’s challenges with both intelligence and humanity.
